UC520 initial configuration -Step 1 Back Up
Ok you just got your gear and you know you want to plug it in and take a look.
DON'T PLUG IT IN YET. The first thing to do after unboxing your UC500 and inventoring the parts is to back up the flash that comes with it. If you want to go back to a factory default config it is a good idea to have a copy of it. Be sure to do this before powering the unit on. The UC520 uses flash while in operation to serve firmware to phones, ringtones and music on hold so if you remove it while the unit is powered on bad things can happen. In fact the box says do not remove while unit is in operation and Cisco gves you a screw-on flash cover as well. My experience has been that there is usually a newer version or point rev out than what ships installed on the box ,and I like to upgrade first. That is why I back it up before I begin.
What is on the flash?
Your Cisco IOS, Phone Firmware, Rigtones, Factory default config and the GUI files for Call Manager/Unity Express. The Unity Express files are not stored in flash other than the shared GUI files.
How to Back up Flash
Get a 9 dollar 7 in one card reader and copy to a directory on your local PC.
One interesting thing I noticed about the flash. It actually said made in the USA on back. Wow, I didn't know we still made stuff here ;)

Erased CF Card
Hello All,
It is a good Idea to backup the CF content but I got a few problems doing that.
Whenever the original CF card is inserted into a CF reader on a PC (Win XP typically), Blue Screen FASTFAT.SYS dump !
Only my Mac is able to read it (and it has a strange name like ç or H, depending on the card).
I had a problem with one card (somewhere I got something wrong and screwed the config), I said to myself 'ahah ! Restore the CF Content from original !'.
So I formatted the card and launched a copy... it fails randomly saying that a 4 Kb file is too big, no more space, blablabla...
The only thing that worked was to copy file by file (that's 146 drag and drop).
BUT... since I formatted the card, My pal PC can read the card without crashing ?!
And my UC520 can boot from any of the 2 cards (Cisco Original and Cisco erased/restored original).
From there I have a few questions :
1. How do I back up the card properly ? Is the Mac backup copy option OK ?
2. What is the proper format of the CF Card, should we format it ?
3. How do we copy files back in a nice way ?
4. Why PC doesn't like 'factory formatted' Cisco CF Card ?
5. Does a CF backup from a 16U work in a 8U or vice-versa ? (actually I'll try that tomorrow and answer that one)
6. Does Cisco provides a default package containing all the files to be restored to a accidentally erased CF ?
7. What is the only file required on the CF for the UC520 to boot ?

Use FXO ports instead of BRI ports
Newbie to UC500 but experienced IP engineer: My model of UC500 has built-in BRI ports. I have purchased a VWIC2-2FXO card to use for the public switched network instead of the BRI ports. Cisco Configuration Assistant -> Configure -> Telephony -> Voice ->Device initially shows Built In: 4 FXS and Built In: 4 FXO. It then has a think about it and changes to Built In: 4 FXS and Built In: 2 BRI which is fine. However, it is only then that the panel below shows Public Switched Telephone Network and gives me the option of Basic Rate Interface BRI Switch Type. I can change this from the default Basic-NET3 to None but was hoping to see the FXO ports appear in the panel. Any assistance on FXO on VIC to be confogured for Public Switched Telephone Network would be appreciated. I have trawled various manuals but no joy so far.
First Time Install
I am installing my first UC500 system and having the following problem:
While imaging the uc500 I get the following message:
java.lang.nullpointerexception

The instructions in the Assembly Guide - Cisco SBCS Demobox v.1.0 states the following:
Step 6 Go to “Maintenance” menu on the left navigation pane; select “configuration
archive” and within that select “restore”. Select the restore image and then select
“Apply” This step will flash the kit config to the new UC520 from the imaging PC.
----
However the apply button is grayed (not selectable). No selections are available to be made.

You can also download an update from CCO that includes all of those items if you have a service contract on your UC520. http://www.cisco.com/cgi-bin/tablebuild.pl/UC520
The updates contain the complete set of files necessary for a UC520 - IOS, phone loads, web gui, Unity express, Unity express license, and config files for every model of UC520 including 32 and 48 user.
I downloaded the update just to check out what the 32 and 48 user configs looked like. Entertaining reading. :)
Re-install Complete System?
Hello,
Do you know of any documents that I could follow and help to re-install the UC520 to factory default and base configuration as shipped?
Also I never did a backup as you suggested and now wish I had, what would be different if I did a complete system reset?

Factory default configuration
Hi,
It is fairly easy to get back to the default configuration...
1. Get into command line mode.
2. Go to 'enable' mode.
3. Type in 'show flash:'. One of the last file names will look something like ... UC520-8U-4FXO-K9-FACTORY...etc....
That is the factory default configuration...
4. Type in 'copy flash:(default config file name) startup
That will copy your default config file to the startup-file in NVRAM.
5. Once that is complete...power off and power on the UC520.
You will back to the default....
