I have a customer who we are installing a uc500 with 4 fxo and 8 licenses. Last minute (scope creep), they have a requirement to support remote ip phones without vpn's because remote users travel frequently. Using a softphone is not an option. How can the uc500 be configured to allow the ip phones to connect and operate with the uc500 without a vpn? We also have an ASA 5505 that can be used if needed. The UC500 is located on a network with a static public ip. If we need to open ports to allow traffic, this can be done as well. Assistance would be greatly appreciated. |

Security from remote hackers?
I wouldn't recommend this. Hakcers are going ot use this companies phone system for long distance calls and cause the company major issues with there system.
I would really site down and explain this to the client. Usually they do not understand this stuff and at first it seems like a good idea. WHen they understand what they are really doing by opening the internet to their phone system, I think they would reconsider...
Why is softphone not an option? What do they think is a bad idea about it?
Also softphone is very advanced for the remote connections. When the option for "slow connection" is checked, it changes the codecs to make the phone perform better over slow remote connections.

ASA to include phone proxy
Google for asa phone proxy and you'll find a number of references to the new version of ASA IOS (still to be released) to contain phone proxy functionality. This will suit your customer's needs.
First tell them they are
First tell them they are retarded and that they should use the softphone.
Open UDP ports 16384 32767 at the UC500 for RTP
Open TCP ports 2000-2002 for call control.
This assumes they are using cisco phones and SCCP.
Also, without a VPN and softphone, how do they expect to connect the Cisco phones to the remote networks they are visiting, unless those netorks are under the same administration? I know of a lot of sites where their packets wouldn't get out of the building.
