Easely Upgrade UC520 With a 1GB CF Card!
To avoid any IOS/CME upgrade issues now and in the future, plus make room for a lot more content (phone background images for example), we have successfully and easily upgraded the 128MB puny CF card that came with our UC520W to a 1GB card!
Here is the step-by-step process:
1) Buy a new 1GB CF card, noting too fancy or fast, 80x is fine.
2) Backup contents of current CF card either via TFTP or by shutting down, pulling the original card and using in your computer.
==> Ensure you do not loose power to the UC520 during the following steps! <<==
3) Boot UC500 with original card, then disconnect all phones and any WAN or up-link connections to minimize access to the CF card. Leave console cable and ensure you have admin access to the unit.
4) Remove the original CF card, while the system is running, against all warnings.
5) Insert the new 1GB CF card in the UC520 and at the # prompt issue the "format flash" command. This will properly format the new CF card EXACTLY how Cisco expects it to be. (do not format on PC or MAC!)
6) Reconnect the LAN interface and use TFTP to transfer the contents of the original CF to the newly formatted card in the system.
7) Ensure the config references the correct Boot file and then issue a reload command.
8) DONE!!! Enjoy 1GB of CF space at 1/100 the cost Cisco is charging!
Stefan.
P.S. Hold on to the original CF as backup!

I couldnt just skip over the warning about lack of space on the flash, the upgrade bombed out.
I ended up just running 'format flash:' from the console and wiped it clean and ran the upgrade again from CCA 1.8 and it worked fine.

IOS updates but not CME
I have tried two times to update the software and it will update the IOS but not the cme. It keeps timing out. Any ideas?
FTP error
After i turned off the FTP i am now timing out on upload after file 35... anyone else have this issue...
Do you mean CUE?
Updating IOS updates CME.
Marcos
CME not CUE
I think you are assuming that if it copies the ios file then it copied all of the cme files. It is failing at the copy level. It copys the new ios image and then times out copying the cme files. After the fail when you do a show flash: it only shows one file.
This is driving me crazy. I have been on the phone with tac for 4 hours now.... no success
I see
You meant all the other support files. Got you.
Please email me directly at marchern@cisco.com with the TAC case number when you have a minute. I will get back to you in the morning.

hi
what can i do i have like u 128 and i can't delet all falsh file can u help me ane one tray delet files and update and working
Is it sure to erase all files in flash before update?
Update requires more than 100 Mb and flash is only 128 Mb with less than 40 Mb free.
Can we erase all files stored in flash in order to free enough space to make update?
Is there any file that we must keep without delete it?
I've tried to update without erase and it fails.
Then I've deleted some older files and tried again, but fails.
Finally I've tried to update manually.
IOS: ok
CUE: ok
Phone loads: fails!
Command executed: archive tar /xtract tftp://172.16.9.158/CME-Phone-Loads-7.0.1.tar flash:
At the middle of extracting files I got this message: No more root directory entries available
Then I cheked flash and I have 219 entries total, which around 120 are root entries, and 60 Mb free space.
I don't know what more files can I delete.
Problem solved
Finally problem was solved formatting flash card.
After that I did these steps:
- Copy Phone-Loads to flash
- Copy Support-Files to flash
- Copy IOS to flash
- Plug in card at uc520 and starts machine
Phones does not register.
- Upgrade uc520 with CCA
Phones does not localize.
- Copy localization files to flash
archive tar /xtract tftp://x.x.x.x/CME-locale-es_ES-4.1.0.2.tar flash:
configure terminal
tftp-server flash:7921-dictionary.xml
tftp-server flash:7921-font.dat

That's all folks!
Just another reason
To complain about the 128Mb card.
I mean seriously, what would the true cost delta be to Cisco for a single card size of 512Mb. When you get down to it a 256Mb card isn't big enough either.
...and if you want to upgrade to a 512, there's no real instructions to do it. I called my distributor and that were like ??!!???!!!....
I would prefer to eat the cost of a 512 card when selling systems if I could just get the proper upgrade instructions.
...and, where's this instructions on how to get around this size constraint. There really isn't one other than back up all of your files, whack just about everything that then TFTP the stuff that you need back. A totally lengthy process. I thought the CCA was supposed to just "work it out."
Sorry for the rant, but I'm in the middle of fighting my own issues with my demo system and I'm going to end up spending half the day with TAC because the documentation is missing that I need.
Did an Upgrade last night. . .
SO I helped a client with an upgrade to this package last night. We needed support for the 7916 expansion modules.
It worked fine without removing any files from flash, but I have some undocumented tips for using CCA to do an upgrade. . .
First of all use the latest and greatest version of CCA Always. (current is 1.8)
Second - The PC that is running CCA should be plugged directly into a ethernet port on the UC520. DO NOT PLUG IT INTO A PHONE. (Trust me here)
Third - Turn off all Firewall, FTP and TFTP programs on the PC running CCA. Then launch CCA.
Fourth - Back up your Flash - (easy way is to buy a chead card reader and copy the contents to your PC)
Fifth - When you start the upgrade you will get a warning saying that there is not enough space on your flash. IGNORE IT. The upgrade process from CCA will remove the older versions of firmware and IOS so you should have enough space.
1-Check 2-Check 3-Check 4-Che
1-Check
2-Check
3-Check
4-Check
5-Check
....result, not working.
Maybe I'm just not clicking the button the right way.... ;~D
sorry to hear you are having issues
What exactly are the error messages you are getting?
I do agree with you that a larger flash would be nice.
If it is a non production system you can always use a flash card reader on a pc to erase the files and plop on the extracted files from the zip that cisco gives you. (don't copy over the CUE.zip files as Unity Express has separate flash storage) Then find the config for your model Uc520 and save it as the running config. This will give you a nice clean install to start with.
There is also a manual upgrade process that you can use for Unity Express.
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/voice_ip_comm/unity_exp/rel3_2/installat...
The process works fine.
The only issue is you need to be familiar with the command line.
Replace your running conf with a default one
I was getting errors as well (using CCA 1.8), and it would fail on step 14-16. For troubleshooting I loaded the default 4.2.9 configuration, rebooted, and performed the upgrade.
After the upgrade, I compared the original 4.2.9 conf with the new config, and added the changes into my real config (main items were ios image to boot, TFTP file names, and loads), and uploaded the config.
System is working, but I noted the following:
1) Phones have auth fail messages when trying to do their firmware upgrade (7970 / 7975).
2) If you go back to the system maintenance page in CCA1.8 it shows the bootstrap version of IOS as the current loaded version instead of the actual version.
Is there any reason to use
Is there any reason to use the IOS version in this software pack versus 12.4(22)? I was just about to upgrade one of my UC520's to 12.4(22) tonight due to a problem i'm trying to resolve. Maybe i'll try this update first.
Reasons
The only reason to use this IOS version is that it is the one that we used to test the whole solution. You can still go and upgrade to 22T, but from a holistic standpoint, we at Cisco can only test finite permutations.
Good luck,
Marcos
I upgraded a demo box last
I upgraded a demo box last night and it went well. It failed the first time using the steps above but then I just went through the CLI and deleted the IOS from flash and ran it again and everything updated successfully.
One thing I did notice was that I had the ability to configure a routing protocol... I thought that the UC didn't support that feature. I haven't tested my OSPF config yet and I have never even tried configuring it on other UC's that came my way but is this something new?
Regards,
Andy
Not supported
What are you doing exactly to enable routing protocols on the UC500? This is not supported:
UC520(config)#router bgp 3
Protocol not in this image
UC520(config)#router rip
Protocol not in this image
UC520(config)#router ospf 3
Protocol not in this image
