Data port on these Phone
In the UC5x0 any phone firmware prevous to version 8-1-16b; would NOT have support for the DATA port, so in order to have the phones DATA port enabled, you would need to upgrade to 8-1-16b. or have the COMPLETE UC5x0 Upgraded

Have fun!!
So i bought two brand new
So i bought two brand new Cisco 524SG phones, I specifically got the "S" model for the switch. But no computer I plug into the PC Port will connect, I then found this thread saying that this switch might actualy be disabled!?
I want to confirm that it is actualy disabled on this 524SG model. Also is it only disabled in the software settings? I saw another thread talking about disabling the PC Port, maybe its disabled and can be enabled in the same way?
Enabling the switch port on 524SG phones
Anyone find out how to do this?
I have 24 of these: http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/ps9863/index.html - and when you plug a PC into the PC port you get nothing.!@??!!@!@$!$#@%!@#
Cisco says the 524SG - 'S' for switch has a switch on it...
"....A 10/100 PC switch port enables LAN connectivity to a colocated PC that helps you reduce additional phone wiring costs. Designation of separate 802.1q VLANs for PC and phone provides security and reliability of voice and data traffic. The phone can be powered by a network switch with Power over Ethernet (PoE) capability or use an optional power adapter."

Any updates on the problem?
Red Headed Stepchild?
I'm wondering if these will be the new red headed step child of their IP phones like the SIP 3911 were. I'm trying to get one going now without much luck.

? The two new Cisco 500 Series phone models offer customers the option of having a 10/100 switch port for connecting to a co-located PC via a LAN connection, if needed. The Cisco Unified IP Phones 521SG and 524SG offer the 10/100 switch port, while the 521G and 524G models do not.
? These phones are designed to be used exclusively with the Cisco Unified Communications 500 Series for Small Business, and will only work with the UC500 for call control.

BUT....
The rumor on these phones is that they do not have the built in switch. Therefore, a PC cannot be connected to the phone. For those existing installs, having to have a 2nd data port for the phone could be a project killer.
Has anyone seen these phones to verify/discount my statement?

Switch port on the 521 and 524 phones
It's true these phones did not include a built-in ethernet switch when they first came out but that has changed. Effective August 20, these phones are orderable with an optional ethernet switch for an additional $10.
PC Port
You are right, there is no PC port on these IP Phones.
PC Port
The PC Port is physically still there. However, it has been disabled in the firmware. If you remove the back cover of the phone you will find that they are identical to the SPA942 Linksys phone. BTW, I have tried without success to get the Cisco firmware on the Linksys sets. The phone will download the firmware and attempt to reboot, but wont actually load the Cisco firmware. I really dont understand why they would disable the PC port. Seems like a waste for being able to get the UC500 into low cost customers that are only looking for a quality dial tone system with tremendous upside. These customers are looking for some flexibility and ease of administration that the UC500 can bring, but are put off by the 79xx IP Phone price tags.
Marketing ...
Marketing ...
A new low cost instrument was needed because the "gapstopper" 3911 was ridiculous and only partially available.
They felt the need to remove some feature in order not to jeopardize sales of bigger models. Same happened with the 7902/06/11/12 where the mike for handsfree has even a connector on the board but was then disabled.
The idea is to have a product that compare price-wise with a digital phone of a legacy PBX that goes in places where no data connection is needed. At the same time customers willing that take advantage of that in all the places where also a data connection is needed, will have to spend in buying more switch ports.
Not differently from all the other companies of this world, Cisco is there to make money.
Linksys vs Cisco
Don't be fooled, these phones are not like the Linksys versions though they look just like it. They have a completly different firmware build and also these phones do not work with the CME on all plateforms. Cisco only supports these on the UC500. If you have a ISR Router they are not supported and you will not get TAC help for it. Thourgh I think the phone load will work on any CME model. The word from Cisco is sell only if you have to. If you sell these there is no upgrade path for the larger use if they grow beyond 50 users. But they are good Cheap ip phones.
Is there any way to put the
Is there any way to put the Cisco firmware onto the Linksys phones? Isn't the hardware on the phones the same, the only difference is the firmware?
The phones are so new that
The phones are so new that hardly anybody has access to firmware yet. If you want to try adventurous things on them that's good, but be aware that cisco can anticipate easy moves, beside you take the risk of converting them into doorstoppers instead.
The firmware is in the 4.2.8
The firmware is in the 4.2.8 update in a file named cp524g-08-01-10.bin, however, I'm not sure how to define the load type in telephony-services. Can anyone please provide me with the "load 524" line in there as well as the ephone and ephone-dn info from your running config?
My phones get stuck at a "Downloading XMLDefault.cnf.xml" screen. I can't use the CCA to configure them because we're 99% SIP 3911 phones here and the CCA doesn't know enough about my SIP phone config for it to play nice with my system.
Stuck On Downloading XMLDefault.cnf.xml
I have found the phone load that you need to use, if you type in load 521G-524G cp524g-08-01-12 into your telephony service , then copy the file to the tftp server the phone should work fine
linksys
It's linksys SIP phones.
so anyone have any info is it running SIP or SCCP ?
The protocol on these IP
The protocol on these IP Phones is SPCP (Smart Phone Control Protocol). SPCP is essentially SCCP enhanced to support these phones. SIP is not supported on these IP Phones.
