Overhead Paging

Hi all,

I have deployed several UC based systems using the handsets for paging. Now I have a customer that wants an overhead system that will do paging as well as play music. Does anyone have any suggestions on what product to use, Im sure this has been done before and there are a number of products out there. This is a smaller retail area that the speakers will cover.

Thanks for the help,

Terry

fxo port

We purchase bogen amplifiers, they have a tip and ring input for the fxo port on the cisco and automatic audio cut-over during paging. they are also rock solid and will last a good while.

Has anyone sucessfully set up

Has anyone sucessfully set up overhead/ speaker paging using either a spare analog trunk port, or an analog set port, as the speech path to the speakers?  This is common on other key/PBX systems.

What we did

I'm not sure this will work for you but our installation at our company included integrating into an existing overhead paging system that went throughout the entire plant.  What we did was pull apart a 7911g phone and tap into the speaker phone wires, then put that directly into the input of the amplifiers.  We then set that phone to be in the main paging group and it has worked flawlessly for almost a year now.  We also needed a night ringer option for a back line and used a call forward setup to forward all calls to that extension, 629, to where it will ring through the paging system, then any phone can pickup using the softkey and dialing 629.  It was more or less rigged up but it was the simplest way to do exactly what the company wanted without sourcing additional hardware.

If I was to use a similiar setup in an installation with music over the paging system, I would use a seperate music player, with independant volume adjustment, then set the music low enough to where when a page came through it could easily be heard over the music.

Like I say, since this is 'rigged' it may not be something worth looking into for you.  We actually were able to make a plug on the back of the 7911g to where the speaker output appears to be original to the phone rather than our trial of just having two wires hang out the side of the phone.  Obviously this will void the warranty on the phone so be aware of that.

The one down side to this that doesn;t happen often but when we had a phone button sticking on a phone happened a few times is that if a person makes a page, then puts the page on hold rather than hanging up, it will play the music on hold music if you have that enabled, or hold the page line open if not.  Threw us for a loop when all the sudden after the page we started hearing Christmas music playing out of nowhere.....

Thanks for the suggestion.

Thanks for the suggestion. There are so many different options available, it is nice to know what models to look at that you know for sure will work.

Valcom VIP-201

I setup overhead paging for a client with a Cisco 1861 CME system moving into a new office.  The office already had some existing Valcom speakers, so we used a single Valcom model VIP-201.  The Valcom is setup as a SIP extension on the system.  When the extension is dialed, you record a message and hang up.  The page then goes out over overhead speakers.

The unit had a single RCA port for music input.  We have it hooked up to a cheap mp3 player with royalty free music on a repeat playlist.  When an overhead page is called in the music fades out.  There is no volume knob on the Valcom so we controlled the level with the mp3 player.  We have it set at about 30% level.

I don't have the speaker part number in front of me, but they were sized to fit in a drop ceiling by replacing tiles.  The speakers have a separate power supply which is sized out by the total number of speakers you install.  We hooked them up with regular Cat5e cable, which is what Valcom recommended.  Since the power and signal are on separate lines, you can wire all the speakers in a series without worrying about impedance.  The downside is that you have to use Valcom speakers with the system.
