With the launch of the apple iPhone SDK, I wonder (if when) Cisco will deliver an iPhone softphone that will integrate with CallManager and CallManager Express.
Here are some reasons I think it may be on the way and one reason I don't care . . .
- Apple announced that they will be supporting Cisco VPN officially in release 2.0. So connecting to my Cisco network will not be an issue.
- Apple reportedly will not restrict VOIP over WiFi, just over cellular networks
- We know that Apple and Cisco reached an agreement over the iphone trademark.
- There are Nokia mobile phones that work with CallManager
- With the Apple iPhone rapidly gaining smartphone market share it is a bit of a no-brainer business-wize for Cisco.
- Cisco shouldn't let the competiton beat them to market with such a potentially market changing product.
So what if Cisco doesn't release an iPhone client?
I will just use the first SIP phone that comes out for the iPhone.
Truephone has already demonstrated a SIP softphone on an iPhone and I can connected any SIP phone to my UC520 or CallManger already, I just may have to pay for a SIP license for it.
So, the Apple iPhone version 2.0 is do out in June, I can't wait to see what happens. I think it will be interesting.
Just my .02
Ted
my fingers are crossed
