Cisco Configuration Assistant 1.5

Cisco Configuration Assistant 1.5 Screwed Up My Local and Long Distance Dialing

In my local dialing area I am required to use 10 digit dialing for all local calls. Previous versions of CCA do not allow 10 digit local dialing. Modifications can be made via CLI to allow 10 digit local dialing. I was assured by Cisco's Technical Assistance Center (TAC) that CCA 1.5 would address and correct this short coming. Well CCA 1.5 does address this issue, but now both my local, 10 digit dialing, and my long distance, 11 digit dialing, do not work. After upgrading from CCA 1.1(11) to CCA 1.5, I was forced to revert back to using CCA 1.1(11). Anyone else having this problem? Any useful suggestions?

CCA 1.5 - no way o add a single SIP PSTN to Phone

With CCA 1.0, you typed in a PSTN DID at the MORE of the USer tab. With CCA 1.5 that is no longer the case. You have to use the one-to-one or many-to-one DID configure section of the Dial Plan tab. Trouble is, you can't have just a single PSTN! Trying to do so will cause an error. I had to use CLI to associate the lone PSTN SIP DID to a phone.

Also, some SIP trunks have "illegal" PSTN number to register the DID. Try puting "+1234567890" in the CCA AA PSTN Number box. Back to the CLI you go....

CCA

Would you happen to have a copy of the config before you tried 1.5?

GG CCA, GG

I love Cisco I really do, but hey, what's up?!?!?!?!?!

I recently saved the telephony piece under CCA1.5 because it was asking for user ID for some new phones that I got up and running with my LAP APs... Hey, at least it did the LAP conversion from standalone...

Funny thing is...

It completley re-wrote my dial-plan
It erased my Translation profile
It created it's own translation profiles
It re-ordered all of my dial-peers.
It removed all priority that I had set on all my dial-peers
It add it's translation profile to all my dial-peers...

Cisco rep says CCA 1.0 and 1.5 is only, ONLY intended for inital depolyment of a UC520. Never to be used after that, only CLI from there on out.

I am glad it destroyed my dial-plan, good thing for backups.

The official word from Cisco

The official word from Cisco is that they want everyone to use CCA exclusively. They are doing this to make it easy to administer for the average network admin. HOWEVER, they understand that it does not have the power of the CLI. For CLI-aware admins, they recommend using CCA to ease deployment/initial config, then using CLI from then on. Never go back and forth between the two. Same goes for using CCA 1.5, then going back to 1.1.

When I want to make major changes to a box (for example, changing a system from POTS lines to SIP Trunks), I will backup the config, use CCA to make all the changes, then compare the pre- and post- config files, and edit them manually, keeping the changes I want, and voiding the changes CCA made that I didnt want. It helps to have CCA create all the dial peers and junk, but you have to watch that it doesnt change other settings on you.

The power is at the command line for Cisco products

I've been thinking it for a while now I will say it.
Cisco GUIs take a while to get it right. Every version gets better but the power is learning the command line. Jhfoo's comment above is right on the money. The GUI saves hours of tedious commands, but I always end up doing some config at the command line. Now, if you are an end user I know you don't want to hear that! If you are a professional installing the system having a CCNA or equivalent knowledge will give you the best chance of success and make it easy for you to learn the telephony specific commands.
The UC520 is a really simple complicated system. Yes that is an oxymoron. You need to know , routing, switching/VLANs, security, vpns, wireless and telephony. It is hard to be an expert on everything and the GUI does save you some of the burden of learning everything.

OK now if you know your way around the command line a bit where to you get the telephony specific knowledge.

First look at Cisco's Soulution Reference Network Design (SRND) for Call Manager Express at www.cisco.com/go/SRND
Yes, the UC520 is running CallManager Express and Unity Express for that matter.

If That Doesn't work -
Buy the CallManager Express Cisco press book - It is dated but the command line reference in that book is great.

If that doesn't work -
Take a Cisco Authorized Class - (Blatant Commercial Here - I'm a CCSI for Global Knowledge and teach the class for Call Manager Express)

The CCA is only a GUI to the

The CCA is only a GUI to the IOS config. You can always jump into the IOS if you are familiar with the commands.
